Common Waveform Mistakes to Avoid
Waveform is straightforward but beginners make predictable mistakes. Here's what to avoid when starting music production.
Waveform is straightforward to use, but there are common mistakes that frustrate beginners. This guide shows you the pitfalls and how to avoid them.
Mistake 1: Not Setting Up Your Audio Interface Correctly
You plug in your interface and Waveform doesn't recognise it. The audio comes out of your laptop speakers instead of your monitors. This is usually an operating system setting, not Waveform's fault. Check your system audio settings before blaming the software.
Mistake 2: Recording at Crazy Loud Levels
You record vocals and the waveform is massive, clipping red. Clipped audio is permanently destroyed. Record at about 70% of the meter to leave headroom. You can always turn it up later; you can't recover clipped signal.
Mistake 3: Mixing at Ear-Damaging Volumes
Your monitors are cranked and everything sounds great. Then you listen on headphones and it's a mess. Mix at moderate levels (conversation-loud). Your ears will thank you and your mixes will translate better.
Mistake 4: Not Using a Metronome
You record without the click and the recording drifts off time. Always record with a click or metronome running. It keeps you locked in and makes editing and layering easier.
Mistake 5: Forgetting to Save
You work for two hours and your computer crashes. Waveform saves a backup but it's not guaranteed. Save your project constantly. Ctrl+S is your friend.
FAQ
- Why does my recording sound so quiet?
- You're probably recording with gain too low or monitoring at a low volume. Check the input level before recording, not after.
- Why does my audio have a delay when I play it back?
- That's latency. Reduce the buffer size in Waveform's audio settings. Smaller buffer = less delay but more chance of crackle.
- How do you fix a recording that's out of time?
- Waveform has time-stretch tools. But it's easier to just re-record with a click. Don't settle for sloppy recordings.
- Why do some VST plugins crash Waveform?
- Plugin incompatibility or bugs. Check the plugin developer's website for updates. Sometimes you just need a different plugin.
- Should you master your own music in Waveform?
- For bedroom production, yes. For professional commercial release, hire a mastering engineer. Waveform's tools are capable but you need trained ears.
